Labour Migration and COVID Exodus: The Kerala Experience with Guest Workers

This book is an enquiry into the cultural diversity and social adjustment of the migrant labourers both post and pre COVID-19 pandemic, who had settled in Kerala for the last so many years. Theoretical issues of migration, cultural diversity and re-adjustment of migrants after the COVID-19 pandemic have been adequately dealt with in this book. The book also deals with the economic condition of the migrants in the place of their origin, their reasons for leaving that place, and how their condition improved in Kerala after their migration. It sheds light on their meagre wages, health facilities, their workplaces, sanitation problems, amenities, and how safe they are in Kerala. This book provides evidence on how the pandemic has affected migrants and their children in terms of health, jobs, education, integration measures, and public opinion. It also outlines the facilities provided and measures taken by the government of Kerala for their upliftment and safety. The study also analyses as to how the migrants are looked upon by the local population, by their employers, by the police etc. These migrants are indispensable for the state’s economic progress. This is an excellent reference book for those who wish to be illuminated about the migrant labourers who have become an integral part of the working population of Kerala, and the government response as they became a victim of testing circumstances owing to the pandemic.
