Sociological Overview of India

Even an overview of the sociological conditions of India needs several volumes as the relationship between prehistory, history and cultural studies is very intimate. The book attempts to deal with the main territorial groupings, viz., Tribal Communities, Village Communities and Urban Communities in Indian societies which are parts of the Indian Social Fabric. In dealing with these topics, the book emphasizes the absence of any water-tight compartmentalization and, in turn, definitions of these components in social sciences. However, the author has endeavoured to synthesize the understanding of the domains with the help of available approaches and perspectives in the social sciences. In doing so, the author elaborates on the concepts relating to Varna System and Caste System. Towards the end, the author discusses other essays that are indirectly and implicitly part of the structure, including education, women's status and the role and implications of science, technology and biodiversity studies.
