Impact of Modernisation on Tribal Life

Modernisation is the alteration of a society's structure to increase output. People who have been negatively affected by development in India have primarily been dalits and tribals, particularly women, who face harsh discrimination. Displacement, migration, and critical changes in livelihood patterns have degraded the indigenous people's social and cultural position, leading to increased violence and abuse against them. Tribal participation in government activities that do not clash with their structural cores has been discovered to be widespread. Tribal people of India, who live in difficult and distant locations where modernization has had little impact on their lives, have scarcely attempted to modernise themselves in any meaningful way. Social scientists, academics, students, planners, and policymakers working in tribal development can benefit greatly from this book.

Indira Mukherjee is a professor of anthropology at a public research university in India. Her academic and teaching interests lie in tribal life and traditional medicine.
