Skills of Guidance and Counselling

The Guidance Counsellor draws on knowledge, skills and attitudes from his/her training and experience, to help pupils to make decisions, solve problems, change behaviors or effect changes in their lives. Counselling should be offered on an individual or small group basis. The focus of counselling may be on personal, educational and career issues, individually or in combination. The Guidance Counsellor provides a caring context for counselling young people in personal crisis. Counselling skill goals assumes that clients are the vast majority of ordinary people with many problems, many people function reasonably well, some not. Counsellors assist clients to help themselves. They use counselling skills to develop client’s capacity to use their human potential both now and in future. This step-by-step guide to counselling practice uses the person-centered approach based on psychological contact, congruence, empathy, and unconditional positive regard. This book addresses people who use counselling skills in a wide range of contexts; including counselling, education, mental health, social care and careers guidance.
